Craft + Design Canberra Anytime Workshop | Spring Stitching | Embroidery with Sharon Peoples

Did you enjoy the recent exhibition Exuberance at Craft + Design Canberra? Are you keen to try embroidery but don’t know where to start? Not sure how to get your image onto fabric, what threads to use, or what stitch is easiest? Bring your ideas and respected artist and Exuberance co-curator Sharon Peoples will get you started!

During this 3 week series, Sharon will demonstrate basic stitches, how to transfer a pattern, and what sort of images work best. She will provide lots of samples to inspire you, as well as providing a range of threads, fabrics, needles, hoops and other materials.

Artist Sharon Peoples was born in Melbourne, Australia, into a family that encouraged creativity and making. From a young age, sewing and embroidery became her lifelong passion. Her work primarily explores themes related to the body with a focus on strong decorative elements. Over the past fifteen years Sharon has constructed machine embroidered textiles using soluble fabric to make lace-like structures. These structures are the vehicle for the narratives of life’s complexities.

Sharon Peoples has worked as an artist in Canberra for over 20 years, exhibiting nationally and internationally as well as taking on commissioned work. Her work has been collected by the National Gallery of Australia, the National Museum of Australia, the Parliament House Art Collection, and state institutions. Her work is regularly exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions, with recent highlights including Stitched Art is Art with SEW (Society for Embroidered Work) at the Clerkenwell Gallery, London (2019) and Surface and Depth at the Palazzo Velli Expo Rome (2021), and the Art Textiles Biennale (2021) at East Gippsland Art Gallery.
