2025 Craft + Design Canberra Daily Creative Challenge Curatoreum Prize Winner
Artist Statement | I decided to make a finger puppet each day. As a middle step, I selected a phrase or stanza from a poem related to the daily word to inspire the design. This helped me to ‘get out of my head’ and push creativity in different and unexpected directions. The puppets are made on a resist from wool and silk fibres using wet-feltmaking techniques and embellished with stitching, found objects and occasionally needle felting. This experience challenged me to reconsider what a finger puppet might be. I also worked to move beyond whimsy to embody more thoughtful and emotional responses. I hope my puppets now tell more of a ‘story’ about different aspects of life.
