Lynne Flemons
2025 Craft + Design Canberra Daily Creative Challenge Finalist
Artist Statement | I loved the Challenge. This was my second time participating. I had just finished working on two exhibitions and it was great to do something completely different and creative as well. The idea for my theme came to me when I was in Book Lovers Lane, Fyshwick. I had already purchased many second-hand Australian Geographic some years before thinking I would use them for collage. I was just at the stage of passing them on. As I reached for some Marie Claire mags on display, the two clicked in my mine and a reimagining of Goddesses started to lead to an exciting challenge for me. Championing the Australian environment and its creatures through the idea of Australian Goddesses made up of part human and part flora and fauna gave me a platform to voice my concerns about environmental issues and feelings of eco-grief and other eco-emotions.
With each daily prompt I researched goddess and the word, combining these ideas to create a goddess in the Australian context with a focus on habitats, flora and fauna and goddess as habitat/champion.
The experience engaged me and challenged me. Some words resonated more than others and finding images that suited ideas of Rewilding in relation to the environment and goddesses was a perfect July antidote to winter. It was lots of fun.
