Meet the maker: Kristina Neumann

Kristina Neumann is a Canberra jeweller with a first-class honours Bachelor of Design Arts degree, majoring in Gold and Silversmithing, from the ANU School of Art. She has been represented in a number of exhibitions in the Netherlands, Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra and had a successful solo show as part of Canberra’s KIN Gallery’s Annual Outstanding Graduate award, presented in support of ANU School of Art and Design’s Emerging Artist Support scheme

Kristina uses a diverse range of materials to make a series of sophisticated had fabricated wearable objects that help the wearer and the viewer to appreciate the beauty of built forms.

In my practice I investigate relationships between materiality, material types and the built environment’, she says. ‘I use form, material experimentations, and explorations of process as a means to examine the capacity of objects to evoke meaning beyond their physical characteristics.

Kristina recently curated the Body Space exhibition at the Gaffa gallery in Sydney which drew together the work of six Canberra artists, whose work utilises a broad range of media including glass, wood, metal and clay. Referencing architecture, the body and the spaces in between, and embodied in small scale sculpture and wearable pieces, the six artists bring a diverse range of cultural and personal interests to bearBy experimenting with scale and wearability, the artists invite the viewer to imagine themselves into the spaces and bodily scenarios these works create.

Kristina’s work is represented at Craft ACT by a series of one-off silver and bronze ear jewellery, sure to invite comment.
