Mixed Media

Angharad Dean is an Australian landscape artist working in mixed media to explore connections with the kosmos. She has been developing and evolving her artistic practice for over 20 years. Since 2021 she has been employed as Artist in Residence at the University of Tübingen in Germany where she teaches elements of her approach to art making in the Transdisciplinary Course Program. Prior to moving to Germany, Angharad had a well-established art practice in Canberra and exhibited regularly in Canberra and the region. She has retained her connection to, and her 'place' in Canberra, including her studio, and spends part of each year working from her Australian home.
"I work with flexible materials to bring forth the awe I feel existing on this ever-changing earth, in this kosmos. By living each year on 2 continents I have also learned to truly appreciate how important the sun is to life (to me!) and how climate affects every living thing. By struggling with cultural differences and language barriers the importance of connection, to the earth and every living thing on it, is now central to my practice. I use print making, painting, drawing, collage and textiles including 3-dimensional structures made from delicate thread, to illustrate connection: to reflect on how we are all part of one beautiful world. Underlying all my work is the need to recognise and honour the preciousness of this earth and all life on it. I create my art to encourage the viewer to look differently at the world, to appreciate it. In making my art I love the surprises of the printmaking process, the fluidity of paint and the translucency of ink, the mind bending making of 3D shapes from 2-dimensional embroidery and breaking all the rules to create mixed media pieces that are exciting, unique and have meaning to me and to others."
