Anna Jagiello (aka @gulfwarpossumbaby) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the tension between beauty and breakdown, the visible and the unseen. Born in Communist Poland and now based in Australia, Anna’s practice is deeply informed by a resourceful upbringing, where nothing was wasted and everything had potential. This ethos continues in her art today, using salvaged materials, “trash,” and discarded objects to build emotionally charged 2D and 3D works.
A graduate of the ANU School of Art with a Bachelor of Visual Arts, Anna’s creative path took a sharp detour into the Australian Public Service, where she’s remained for 17 years. The contrast between her artistic instincts and bureaucratic reality fuels her work with quiet irony and introspective grit.
During the COVID lockdowns, Anna embraced her inner “cave troll,” retreating from social structures and turning inward. The global crisis magnified a long-sensed heaviness in human interactions, a recurring theme in her art. Her practice peers into shadowed corners, hunting for subtle details, fractured narratives, and the ways in which too much can still never be enough.
On Instagram as @gulfwarpossumbaby, Anna shares glimpses into her studio practice, found-object obsessions, street art and installations. Her work aims to reminds us that there’s beauty in a breakdown, you just have to be willing to look closely and stay a little in the dark.
