Metal + Jewellery

Diane Appleby is a jeweller/sculptor who is located at the south coast of NSW. Diane was previously based at Stanley Street Gallery in inner Sydney where she made jewellery for exhibitions and worked with clients to make individually designed pieces. Since 2018 she has transitioned from making wearable works to hand-held sculptures. These are predominately formed in copper and enamelled and oxidised.

Hallmarks of Diane’s handmade pieces are form, texture and colour. Her wearable and handheld pieces are designed to delight the wearer by their feel either in the hand or on the body.

Diane’s pieces are imbued with a precious presence whether they are crafted in burnished silver and planished gold with silken tassels or copper that has been enamelled and oxidised. They are designed to bring focus to the senses, and to give the user a place of contemplation.

"In my objects I am exploring the sensation of suspension and stillness, creating spaces for contemplation through tactility, form and surface. Drawing on my landscape practice, I am translating the directness and spontaneity of my charcoal and graphite drawings into three-dimensional form. The interplay of dark and light present in my works on paper is echoed in my objects, where space, shadow, light, and volume become equally expressive.
Enamel is layered and rubbed back in a process analogous to my drawing practice, where charcoal and graphite are built up and erased. This method allows me to investigate transformation—from two dimensions to three, from one material to another—and to observe how marks emerge through edges, voids, and shadows on the vessel surface. The works reveal an ongoing curiosity about how drawing can inhabit form."
