Gabrielle McGrath is the artists behind RedPeg Eco studio. Gabrielle’s passion and primary creative focus began with steel construction based sculpture - which she exhibited regionally and nationally for about 10 years after graduating from The National Art School (ESTC) in Sydney. Jewellery and body adornment have always been a great fascination of Gabrielle’s, including body sculpture, armour and helmets. Having never gained any formal training in Jewellery design and with a sculptural metal smithing background, it’s often said Gabrielle has an unconventional and unorthodox approach to working with precious metals. Her work is made with a sculptors eye and present aesthetically more of an artwork, designed and constructed in the same fashion as a much larger piece. Gabrielle’s jewellery designs are essentially mini sculptures.
"My jewellery and wearble art is handcrafted with an uncontrived aesthetic. I find form through texture and pattern, letting the materials inherent nature shine through. Learning through the freedom of play has meant I’ve developed a distinct style, with a unique aesthetic. I love working with precious metal (sterling silver and gold) and I embrace the use of ethically sourced materials.
I’m dedicated to creating art with minimal environmental impact. I re-cycle, up-cycle and salvage. Natural alternatives to chemicals are implemented in the cleaning, polishing and oxidizing processes. Any metals I buy are recycled from commercial and industrial enterprises, purchased from a dedicated Australian supplier. There is no waste generated as all scrap goes back in the melt pot, effectively creating a closed loop within the studio."
