Jackson is a fulltime maker from Canberra. His main practice is making custom handmade knives, specialising in forging Damascus steel (laminated steel) kitchen knives and art daggers. Before knifemaking he trained in woodworking at joinery workshop that specialised in recycled timber and custom-made furniture. In 2016 he began working as a cutler for Canberra based knifemaking company. Later transitioning to designing and teaching knife making classes. In 2023 Jackson tested for the mastersmith ranking in the USA and received the award for the best submission of the 2023. He is one of only three certified Mastersmiths currently practicing in Australia. He has since participated in a number of exhibitions both locally and internationally. Most notably the Art of cutlery exhibition in New York, USA. More recently Jackson has been using his experience in metalworking to develop a range jewellery inspired by Damascus steel.Â
"The focus of my practice is to blend ancient techniques with modern materials. The art of Damascus steel has been practiced for centuries. This process of heating, folding and forging layers of material to enhance their properties always fascinated me. While the focus was always to create a material with superior working properties, it also allowed the maker to introduce incredible and complex patterns into the work. Examples of this kind work can be seen all over the world.
These same techniques can be modified and then applied to modern day materials like stainless steel and titanium. Unlocking a whole new world of unique patterns and material properties. These modern forms of Damascus are perfectly suited for making tools, cutlery and jewellery. Allowing me to transform everyday objects into something that not only performs well, but looks amazing doing it!"
