Laura Canty
Textiles + Mixed Media
Maker Member
Laura Canty is a current student undertaking a Bachelor of Visual Arts at The School of Art and Design at ANU. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts from the same institution. Her practice spans a varied range of textile methodologies, painting and collage, often blurring the distinctions between each. An emerging maker, Laura has exhibited both locally and interstate, and co-owns Canty's Bookshop.
In her practice she works predominantly with textiles, but also enjoys painting and collage. She finds that in her work each of these disciplines inform and shape the other, and a finished work may often incorporate methodologies which examine components relating to all.
She is drawn to the abstract, and regardless of medium, focus on such painterly concepts as composition, texture, balance, line and erasure. In order to keep things interesting for herself as a maker, she regularly swaps approaches and techniques, interested in the way that a technique may be applied within a new context. She enjoys learning new techniques and experimenting, often without an end piece in mind, and being delighted when the right opportunity arises to incorporate them.
