Originally from Canada, Lia has a BFA in painting from the University of Calgary. She then taught English in Japan, where she became interested in ceramics and went on to get a BFA in ceramics at the Alberta College of Art and Design before moving to Australia, where she undertook an MPhil in ceramics at the ANU. Lia creates sculptural installations, vessels, and jewellery. Her work is created intuitively and experimentally using a diverse range of materials and technical processes. Layered images on three-dimensional forms create a connection between material presence and illusion. Her work is about the evolution of how ideas manifest themselves into objects, an ongoing relationship between surface and form.

"My ceramic sculptures and jewellery are created through playful experimentation across multiple techniques and mediums. Aesthetically, the visual inspirations for my work are natural forms, including coral and sea creatures. This work does not set out to imitate particular organic forms but seeks to capitalise on the strange, richly-patterned and brightly-coloured beauty of the natural world. Conceptually, my work is about the evolution of how ideas manifest themselves into objects and an ongoing relationship between surface and form, or presentation and representation. I create my work using a diverse range of materials and technical processes so that it evokes a sense of multiplicity and pluralism and foregrounds a sense of ongoing creative investigation."
