Louise Hekimian is an emerging visual artist who explores colour, abstraction, and drawing, using mixed media, fabric and threads. After a lifetime interest in arts and crafts, in 2016, she pursued her dream of becoming a visual artist and documented her journey on her website– Artnitso.com. Along the way, Louise’s focus was to understand colour, and while initially, this was to see what colour combinations she could apply to her artwork, this has expanded to include her understanding the performance of colour. This resulted in Louise undertaking a multi-year long methodical analysis of colour found on two colour wheel types. In 2024, Louise published her first print book that provides the result of that colour analysis. The book lists 182 colour sub-relationships, 182 colour temperatures, and 4,320 colour combinations found on a red yellow blue colour wheel, and a cyan magenta yellow key colour wheel.
Louise Hekimian’s drawings represent our life experiences which make us who we are. Our experiences are like threads in our lives. We are influenced by who we have met, their influence on us, our lived experience, and the choices we make. Our behaviour, and the behaviour of people we have met in our lives affects us. As well, ours and other’s spoken words influence us – consciously, and sub-consciously. Louise wants her artwork to help show others their complexity, and to help make them aware of what makes them who they are. Louise represents the narrative of life’s experience in her colour choices, expressive continuous lines, and materials used. The lines may appear like fabric threads, or threads of yarn. They may be represented in stronger, shorter, or bolder lines, and are usually drawn in a medium that supports the line. The views and behaviours we have learnt during our lives are consistently in our behaviour and background. As such, these are represented as perspective in Louise’s artwork. These perspectives may be linear, or inverse. Louise’s artwork is two dimensional. The artworks are created using sticks of colour, such as pastel, pencil, and crayon. They are also created using fluid mediums, such as ink, and acrylic and gouache paint. While the artwork is created on paper, her artwork is also created on fabric, board, and canvas. Colour is the foundational structure of all Louise’s creations. In representing an artwork’s narrative, the colour choice comes before deciding on what marks to make, and what material to use.
