Phoebe Porter is a Canberra based contemporary jeweller. For more than 25 years, she has developed a distinctive practice spanning studio production, commissioned jewellery and the creation of ambitious new work for exhibition. Her practice is grounded in a deep knowledge of materials and processes, with a particular focus on titanium, stainless steel and aluminium combined with precious elements.
Strongly influenced by Bauhaus and Constructivist principles, Porter’s work explores structure, balance, proportion and materiality. She seeks to reduce each piece to its essential elements, creating jewellery that is sculptural and contemporary while remaining closely connected to the traditions of gold and silversmithing.
Porter graduated from the ANU School of Art with a Bachelor of Arts (Gold and Silversmithing) in 2001, studying under Johannes Kuhnen and Ragnar Hansen. She was selected for Talente (2002) in Germany, and then undertook an Australia Council-funded mentorship with leading contemporary jeweller Blanche Tilden.
Since then, Porter’s work has been presented in significant exhibitions including Melbourne Now at the National Gallery of Victoria (2013) and A Fine Possession at the Powerhouse Museum (2014), as well as exhibitions in Japan, Germany, the UK and USA. Her work is highly collectable and is represented in public collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of South Australia and the Powerhouse Museum. Her awards include a Victorian Premier’s Design Mark, as well as grants from Creative Australia, Arts Victoria, and Arts ACT.
