Rhiannon Sothern is a contemporary jeweller based in the Yugambeh Language Region / Gold Coast (AU). Her work is driven by conservation research with coral reefs as a central source of inspiration and concern. With her contemporary works she is currently exploring porcelain, creating bold sculptural pieces that portray bleached coral, these pieces invite reflection and dialogue. Her jewellery brand, Rhia Jewellery, celebrates the reef with heirloom quality silver and gold, using only traceable, fair-mined Australian gemstones. Refined jewellery that leaves a positive legacy. Through both practices Rhiannon aims to raise awareness for the underwater ecosystems, while donating 5% of proceeds to reef restoration.
"I am exploring form and surface, using the slow rhythmic repetition of movement to contemplate the fragile harmony of the natural world. Building these pieces takes time, but is nothing compared to the speed at which real corals grow. Reef restoration is a slow process, and it’s the dedicated humans devoting their careers and free time behind the scenes that drives it. I am brining attention to the cause the best way I know how, through my art & jewellery."
