Veronica Taylor is a Kamberri/Canberra-based ceramic artist. Her work draws from the local landscape: the gentle contours of the Brindabella ranges, the night sky over Canberra, and the boats nestled in the Lake Burley Griffin shoreline. Veronica came to ceramics after a lifetime of living and working in Asia and the U.S. Internationally, she is known as a scholar of legal and regulatory reform. Her artistic journey began with Japanese Tea and being designated a Tea Master in the Urasenke tradition. In Canberra, she had the opportunity to design and build one of Australia’s very few contemporary Tea rooms, which she uses for introducing guests to Tea and curating Tea ceramics and related art works.
"I work in a range of ceramic techniques and materials but my first love is wood firing - the raw and very physical collaboration with local environment and weather. The shapes and surfaces of my work come from my lifelong study of Chadô (Japanese Tea) and connections to Asia. I make clay and ash and shino-style glazes that draw inspiration from Japan, but that showcase the rich properties of Canberra soil and wood. The natural colours highlight the effect of flame on clay and glaze. All my work has richly textured surfaces intended to awaken our sense of touch and recall the marks left by human hands and tools on Australia’s landscape."
