Yukiko Tomishima is a Sydney-based fibre artist who creates nature-inspired works using wet felting and natural dyeing techniques. Inspired by the native flora of Australia and the traditions of Japanese craftsmanship, her work explores themes of nature, memory, and quiet transformation.
Originally from Japan, Tomishima has developed a distinctive practice that combines traditional handcraft with contemporary fibre art. In 2025, she was selected as a finalist in the Australian Fibre Art Award and was also selected for the International Juried Online Fiber Art Exhibition. She shares her passion for felt art and natural dyeing through workshops and a range of creative projects.
Through her practice, Tomishima celebrates the beauty of natural materials and encourages a deeper appreciation of the small details and seasonal changes found in everyday life.
"I create nature-inspired fibre art using wool, felt, wet felting, and natural dyeing techniques. Inspired by the native flora of Australia and the traditions of Japanese craftsmanship, I explore themes of nature, memory, and quiet transformation through my work.
I primarily work with wool and felt, using plant dyes to create colours that reflect the changing seasons. I embrace the subtle variations that emerge through the processes of felting and natural dyeing, seeing these unexpected changes as an important part of each unique piece. My process is slow and hands-on, allowing the materials to guide the final outcome.
Through my practice, I hope to celebrate the beauty of natural materials and encourage a deeper appreciation of the small details, seasonal changes, and quiet moments that connect us with the natural world."
