Wayfaring: Sara Lindsay
Sara Lindsay is a Hobart-based artist and designer. Along with her fellow artists in the Wayfaring exhibition, Lindsay shares an interest in object making and contemporary jewellery practice. For this second iteration of the Wayfaring exhibition series, Sara has produced a body of work, the Progenitor series, which examines printmaking on paper, in three dimensions. The relationships between the body, the object and technology are presented to us by Sara in this intricate wearable series made from paper, stainless steel and 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA). The effect is ethereal.
In each of her pieces, paper curls and twists around a stainless-steel frame. Although her work appears spontaneous and organic, Sara has carefully calculated and geometrically structured the PLA to create distinct forms.
Where paper has historically been the surface upon which a print is impressed, Sarah has allowed a paper form to follow its three-dimensional foundations. Through this process, Lindsay blurs the boundaries between printmaking and sculpture, pushing the medium into new territory and reintroducing us to the possibilities and very definition of printmaking.
The Progenitor series explores the meeting of physical and virtual space. Sara relates, “In this world where the technological is embedded in the everyday, the path of our lives is as much forged by the movement of our physical bodies through space as it is through our imagination travelling the ether.”
Creating printed sculptural objects through a process which combines computer-aided design, additive manufacturing and refined handcrafting skills, Sara employs both virtual and haptic means of art making. In doing so, she considers the duality of the technological and the handcrafted an inherent aspect of her practice.
Although visitors cannot physically visit the gallery, the exhibition can be enjoyed online on the Craft ACT website and social media platforms. A beautiful online catalogue features essays, artist reflections and biographies, photographs and a complete list of works. Most of the works in the exhibition are available for purchase, and artist interviews and video tours simulate the gallery experience.
