Making with the unknown

Making with the unknown
Lucy Irvine

Exhibition on display at Thor's Hammer from 8 - 28 November 2021

The centrepiece for this exhibition is a large-scale suspended sculpture, woven from irrigation piping and cable ties. This work, Made of holes, marked the beginning of Lucy Irvine’s adventure into PhD research, in which she has explored the emergent possibilities of sculptural weaving. She asks, how might we make and come to know, when working without a predetermined design? And how might these strategies for making with the unknown, allow us to think, plan and value differently?

Through the transformation of industrial materials, Lucy draws our attention to the urban fabric: the unseen things that allow our world to function and be built. Combining her interests in art, craft, architecture, design and geography Lucy asserts the importance of the body in the making of new knowledge. Alongside Made of holes, is documentation of subsequent outcomes of her research, extending from gallery-based sculpture to public art commissions, community engagement and experimental teaching methods. Whilst sharing the end results, the viewer is also brought into key processes of mapping modelling and making through maquettes, tests and photos capturing learning and formation at work.
