About the Maker: Akie Haga was born in Japan, a country renowned for its highly-skilled craftsmanship and elegant aesthetic, which form the bedrock of her creative ethos. She has dedicated over 20 years to mastering the art of working with glass. After extensive travels in Europe and studies in the UK, Akie found her home in Australia, where she pursued and completed her Honours degree in the Glass Workshop at the Australian National University in 2004.
Since 2006, Akié has been running a private studio, where she creates wearable art and small sculptures. Her work is sold through galleries and private commissions. Akié currently teaches at the School of Art and Design, Australian National University, and since 2020, she has also been teaching at Canberra Glassworks, offering instruction in flameworking techniques and fabrication support to non-glass artists.
Over the years, Akié has received several awards and grants, including the CAPO Awards, artsACT Project Funding, and the Juror’s Choice in the New Glass Review. Her work has been featured in various group exhibitions across Australia, at venues such as the JamFactory in Adelaide, Brenda May Gallery in Sydney, and Craft + Design Canberra.
