About the Maker: David Walker is a contemporary jeweller and object maker, public artist, occasional writer, curator and mentor. He is the former head of crafts in the School of Art, Curtin University, WA, and foundation coordinator of its internationally renowned jewellery and three-dimensional design courses. His work is represented in national and international public collections and has been published in numerous books, journals and catalogues in Australia and overseas. Walker’s contemporary works make reference to architectural and engineered structures while other works explore the organic rhythms of nature’s spaces and textures. He doesn’t attempt to replicate nature but captures its spirit and energies via a process of abstraction. His work can be found in the public collections of the Montreal Museum of Art, Canada; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas, USA; and Silpakorn University Art Collection, Bangkok, Thailand, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria and various state galleries across Australia.

In addition to his personal artworks, he has completed a number of commissions, from large scale public artworks to ceremonial and small scale presentation works in precious metals as well as liturgical works in a wide range of media. He has held positions as a visiting academic and as an artist-in-residence in Australia and overseas including an Asialink residency at Silpakorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. He was a founder member of the Craftwest (now FORM), in Perth, WA, and Craft ACT in Canberra, as well as a foundation member of the Design Institute of Australia in both cities. He is a former president of Craftwest as well as writer and editor for its quarterly magazine CRAFTWEST. As national president of the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia he was Chair of its first international conference as well as writer and editor for its national newsletter, LEMEL. Walker works from his studio on the south coast of NSW, at Guerilla Bay.
