About the Maker:
Urban Biome is a landscape installation integrating new design concepts in recycled timber and recycled glass, and local native plantings. The piece is a collaboration between Thor Diesendorf from Thor’s Hammer, glassworker Spike Deane and David Taylor from Ephemeral Landscapes.
In keeping with the Design Canberra festival theme of regeneration, care has been taken in the choice of materials and construction methods.
The timber decking tiles, hexagonal planter boxes and seats are made by Thor’s Hammer from durable recycled hardwoods. The timbers are sourced from short lengths and offcuts of Thor’s Hammer remilled decking. The components are designed to be creatively combined to quickly make intimate spaces in balconies, courtyards and patios. The decking tiles are installed on connectors made from recycled plastic and are straightforward to fit together in hexagonal and other patterns. They do not require attaching to the ground and can be quickly and easily removed and rearranged, or even reinstalled in a new location.
All timber components are primarily joined with Lignoloc timber nails, which are fired from a nail gun. The pressure and heat created as they penetrate activates the lignin in the timber and creates a natural chemical bond between the nail and the timber. We are hoping that the Lignoloc nails are widely used in future, and we can see the day when we never have to pull out a nail again.
