About the Maker: Born in the city of Seoul, Korea, and in 1996, Kenny Yong soo Son and his family moved to Sydney, Australia.
In 2010, Son graduated from his undergraduate (with Honours) studies at the Sydney College of Arts, majoring in Jewellery & Object, further going on to complete his Masters in Design, in 2013, majoring in Object & Accessories, at the University of Technology, Sydney.
In the same year, Son was a successful candidate to the 'Australia-Korea Foundation Scholarship' from Australia-Korea Foundation, in which he spent 6 months in South Korea participating in an intensive mentorship program with Korean Designated Metal-Craft Master, Sung-joon Cho.
The program involved intensively learning and mastering traditional Korean metal craft techniques for the entire 6 months, following with a main exhibition of the mentorship held at gallery ‘Ahwon’ in Seoul and at gallery Studio 20/17 in Sydney.
In November 2014, Son was granted an Art Start Funding (Australian Council for the Arts) to build and expand his private workshop, allowing for the further growth of his practice and opportunities to generate collaborations with fellow practitioners.
Furthermore, in June 2016, Son was awarded an Art Project Grant (Australian Council for the Arts) to conduct and partake in his first overseas Solo-exhibition titled 'The Study', at gallery 'Sikijang', Seoul, Korea.
From October 2016 – November 2017, Son temporarily based his practice and life in Shangai, China, where Son was the acting Studio Director of a Jewellery & Metal craft studio, San W.
Following his return from Shanghai, in 2018 Son was granted a year long residency at the Gold & Silversmithing Studio, Australian National University, ACT.
In 2022, Son was awarded the 2nd overall prize for his work '925 Heptadecagonal Shuki & Shuhaidai' in the prestigious Itami Crafts Award for the Itami Museum of Crafts, Japan.
Son is currently based in Sydney, where he basis his practice and teaching.
