First Nations Curatorial Opportunity at Craft + Design Canberra
Exhibition Dates: 12 June – 26 July 2025
Craft + Design Canberra is calling for Expressions of Interest from First Nations curators, artists, and makers to curate or lead an exhibition in June–July 2025. This exhibition offers an emerging First Nations curator the opportunity to explore a theme or idea while showcasing their talents alongside those of the participating artists. The number of artists in the exhibition will be determined by the curator (in consultation with Craft + Design Canberra), with at least 33% of the artists or makers coming from the ACT and surrounding region.

Curator Fee: $2,000 (flat rate)Artist Fee: Minimum $450 per artist (up to 6 artists)
Applications will be assessed on creativity, originality and artistic merit by a small panel of Craft + Design staff, First Nations Members and Accredited Professional Members.
Curator Responsibilities
- Develop and present a cohesive exhibition concept and artist list
- Engage with participating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists with respect and cultural sensitivity
- Facilitate agreements with artists for the exhibition at Craft + Design Canberra (June–July 2025)
- Advise Craft + Design Canberra on any cultural sensitivities related to the handling or display of works
Craft + Design Canberra’s Responsibilities
- Pay the curator, artists, and writer according to NAVA recommendations
- Provide administrative support to the curator
- Installation of the exhibition
- List saleable works on the Craft + Design Canberra website
- Hold an official opening for the exhibition
- Promote the exhibition through its website and social media channels
- Produce a digital exhibition catalogue
- Create and share promotional materials with the curator and artists
